Project ChordaCordis
ChordaCordis was born in 2024 from the meeting of two musicians far from home — "home" understood in the broadest sense: the musical territories that mark our childhood, the ones we explore along the way, the ones handed down to us by the teachers we encounter. From the exchange of native and acquired roots, Colin Heller and myself began searching for a common language.
The result is a sonic world stretching from southern France and central Italy to the Mediterranean and the Middle East, from the Middle Ages to the present day — held together by monody, that most universal of musical materials. The repertoire moves across sacred music, dance, and entertainment, drawing on 14th-century estampies and noëls, traditional music, and original compositions, transmitted through both written and oral traditions.
The instruments reflect the same plurality: the oud, the chitarrino, the Greek bouzouki, and the tenor mandola share the stage with the baritone violin — a recent reinvention of a 16th-century Italian instrument — and the Swedish nyckelharpa.
